Shopify Email Apps for a New Clothing Store: Compare Three Options

For a new Shopify clothing store, choose an email app by the first task you need to complete. This guide compares Shopify Messaging, Privy and Klaviyo for signup collection, a welcome email and ongoing cost. It is a practical shortlist, not a ranking of every app or evidence that one produces better sales.

Start a Shopify trial when you are ready to build your store. Check the current offer and regular subscription terms. Use trial time to prepare the store and test the workflow; subscriber sending can have separate eligibility requirements.

Compare the task and the billing measure

Our suggested starting point is to write the task down before approving an app subscription. Do you need campaigns inside Shopify, a specific signup-display workflow, or a separate platform for email and customer-data rules? Read the matching setup guide after reviewing the comparison.

These are tasks to assess, not exclusive capabilities. All three may cover more than the single task shown. Check the feature and package you actually need instead of treating an app's whole feature list as a launch checklist.

Dated allowances are different from a store launch budget

The official Shopify Messaging listing is free to install. Its email pricing documentation gives eligible Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus stores 10,000 free email sends per calendar month, shared across campaigns and applicable automations. Additional email pricing starts at US$1 per 1,000. Abandoned checkout automations are excluded from that allowance. This does not cover your Shopify subscription or every mobile channel.

During a Shopify free trial: the Messaging requirements allow campaign creation and test messages to yourself, but sending to subscribers requires an active paid plan, an Online Store channel and a payment provider, alongside the other listed requirements. Check eligibility in your account before scheduling a launch campaign.

The Privy pricing page starts email at US$30/month based on mailable contacts, with unlimited email sends on that package. Display-only pricing starts at US$24/month and uses pageviews. Unlimited sends do not mean unlimited contacts, free SMS or a free store. Confirm the selected bundle so you do not add a separate popup charge to a package that already includes displays.

The Klaviyo pricing page lists a free tier with up to 250 active profiles and 500 email sends per month. Check both limits; a multi-email welcome sequence uses more than one send per subscriber. Mobile-message pricing and allowances are separate. Active profiles and explicit subscribers are different concepts, as explained in our Klaviyo setup guide.

Prices and packages are dated to the update above. Record currency, billing period, contact definition, send allowance, upgrade behavior and optional channel charges from the actual account offer. Include store subscriptions, domains and other costs in your store budget. A free email allowance does not make the whole business free.

Three examples of a reasonable first choice

These are fictional decision examples, not our store results or endorsements based on testing. The point is to connect a tool to a real need and a checkable limit.

“I want one collection announcement inside Shopify.”
Evaluate Shopify Messaging first. Confirm sending eligibility, the subscriber audience and preview behavior, then use the Messaging guide. There is no reason to approve a separate subscription before identifying a missing task.
“I want a signup display and one welcome email.”
Evaluate Privy's form and Flow workflow. Choose the package that includes what you need and check the contact tier. Confirm the form leaves garment information and shopping controls usable on a phone.
“I want a separate platform and can maintain list rules.”
Evaluate Klaviyo's Shopify integration and welcome Flow. Check active profiles and sends together. For example, 200 subscribers receiving three emails each requires 600 sends, exceeding a 500-send allowance before any other sending.

You can also defer a separate marketing app while preparing the store. Accurate garment pages, destination-specific shipping, returns and a contact route matter before an email promotion points shoppers at a collection. An app does not replace those details.

Prepare one welcome workflow

  1. Define the promise: explain what subscribers will receive and in which language. A useful collection update or clothing guide can be enough; a discount is optional.
  2. Connect form and audience: inspect marketing permission and any confirmation step. Keep email consent separate from SMS and order-contact details.
  3. Write one message: introduce the store, link to a real collection and show where to find garment measurements, shipping, returns and contact information. Replace template placeholders.
  4. Verify the whole path: use your own authorized test address, check confirmation and list entry, inspect the intended welcome message and test its unsubscribe route before live sending.

Translate the signup form, confirmation, welcome email and linked policy pages for the audience. Test each actual language and device layout rather than assuming the app translates everything when the storefront locale changes.

If sourcing through Trendsi account options, follow the connection guide and supplier evaluation guide. Confirm the exact item's stock, measurements and route before featuring it. Avoid invented reviews, scarcity and delivery guarantees.

Five checks before sending to subscribers

  1. Audience: check the intended list, channel-specific permission, confirmation and unsubscribe behavior. Do not treat an integration import as consent.
  2. Allowance: inspect eligibility, package and current usage. Count planned campaigns and welcome messages together, using the tool's own billing rules.
  3. Ownership: identify which system sends each welcome, cart and post-purchase message. Disable or hand over overlapping automations deliberately so one signup does not trigger duplicate promotions.
  4. Accuracy: check product and variant links, stock, measurements, prices, policy wording and any coupon at checkout. Inspect phone layout and translated copy.
  5. Delivery: check sender identity, reply route, domain setup and actual message status. A preview is not proof of list entry, and a sent message is not proof it reached the primary inbox.

Keep a simple record of confirmed signups, sent or skipped messages, link visits, unsubscribes and related orders. Review refunds and actual costs before describing any return on investment. Attributed revenue does not demonstrate that the app caused extra profit.

Add or switch tools for a specific missing task

Write down what your current setup cannot do, then check whether a package change or another app solves that task at an acceptable cost. Do not select a tool only because its marketing mentions AI, personalization or predictive sales.

Before switching, record consent and suppression data, signup destinations, triggers, coupons, sender settings and current billing. Plan the handover so the new form and welcome workflow work together. Follow the selected vendor's current migration instructions and review our app removal and billing guide before removing the old tool.

Purchase prediction, extra channels and elaborate sequences can wait until you have the required data and a reason to maintain them. Installing an email app does not improve Google rankings by itself. Keep the store and its helpful guides accurate, accessible and connected through clear reading paths.

Email-app questions for a first clothing store

Which email app is best for a new clothing store?

Choose against a specific task, budget and workflow. Compare Shopify Messaging for campaigns inside Shopify, Privy for signup displays and welcome Flows, and Klaviyo for a separate email platform. There is no proven winner for every new store.

Can I send Shopify Messaging campaigns during a free trial?

You can create campaigns and send test messages to yourself. Shopify's requirements say sending to subscribers needs an active paid plan and the other store requirements; confirm the current rules before launch.

Do all three tools count usage the same way?

No. Compare email sends, active or mailable contacts, pageviews and mobile-message charges separately. Use the actual package and billing period shown in your account.

Should I install several welcome-email apps?

Start with one responsible system for the welcome workflow. Multiple tools can overlap and produce duplicate messages or charges. Add another only for a specific missing task and check the handover first.

Does giving an email address at checkout mean the person subscribed?

Do not assume so. Check channel-specific marketing permission separately from order-contact details. Use subscribed email contacts for the beginner welcome workflow described here.

Does an email app guarantee sales or higher Google rankings?

No. Email tools manage forms and messages; installing one does not prove more sales, profit or higher search rankings. Assess actual orders and costs, and keep your site content useful and accurate.
