Klaviyo for Clothing Stores: Free Limits and Welcome Email Setup

Klaviyo connects Shopify customer and order data with signup forms, email campaigns and automated Flows. For a first clothing store, start by deciding whether you need a separate email platform. Our suggested first workflow is a consent-based signup list and one useful welcome email, with a clear sending budget.
Start a Shopify trial when you are ready to build the store. Check the current offer and regular subscription terms. Klaviyo is optional, and its plan is separate from your Shopify subscription.

Klaviyo's free plan has two email limits
On the date above, the official pricing page lists up to 250 active profiles and 500 email sends per month, plus US$5 of mobile messages per month, with availability and costs dependent on region and carrier. Free email support is listed for the first 60 days. Free installation does not mean unlimited sending or unlimited contacts.
The Shopify App Store listing shows an Email package at US$20/month for 251–500 contacts, with pricing increasing as usage grows. It still describes a 150-credit SMS/MMS allowance, while the current vendor pricing page uses mobile-message dollars. Do not treat those presentations as interchangeable. Confirm the account's actual package, mobile pricing model, currency and recurring charges before approval; external charges may be separate from your Shopify invoice.
Klaviyo's billing guidance distinguishes active profiles from email sends. Free accounts over the active-profile limit cannot send or set flow emails live until within that limit; paid plans can be moved to a profile-compliant tier. Check account usage and billing preferences before increasing contacts or adding campaigns.
An active profile is not necessarily a subscriber. Integrations can create profiles marked Never Subscribed. Technical eligibility to receive email does not establish permission for your campaign. Our recommendation for this beginner welcome workflow is to use explicitly subscribed email contacts and check permission by channel.
Compare the Shopify Messaging guide and Privy guide against the same needs: signup form, welcome message, usage allowance and ongoing cost. Choose one responsible system for each message type.
Plan sends before adding a three-email sequence
Fictional planning exercise: if 200 new subscribers each receive three welcome emails within one billing month, that requires 600 sends. Two emails each require 400 sends, leaving 100 of a 500-send allowance before other messages. One email each requires 200 sends. These figures assume every planned message is sent once and no additional recipients or messages; they are arithmetic, not predicted subscriber growth or campaign results.
Record welcome emails, campaigns and other sending activity together. The subscriber count alone does not show how much of the send allowance a sequence will consume. Check the dashboard's actual usage rather than treating the fictional remaining allowance as an account balance. A skipped message and a sent message are different events.
Our starting suggestion is one welcome email with a useful collection link, accurate measurement guidance and policy links. A signup coupon is optional. If you promise one, confirm the eligible products, minimum spend, expiry and combinations at checkout, and include the discount in your cost record.
Connect the right Shopify store and signup list
Use our App Store installation guide to review permissions and charges. Klaviyo documents both a Starter setup inside Shopify and an existing-account integration route. The screens depend on your account; avoid creating a duplicate Klaviyo account if you already use one.
- Connect the store: install the official app or use Integrations → Explore apps → Shopify in your existing account. Verify the store address and review permissions.
- Enable the storefront embed: turn on Klaviyo Onsite Javascript in Shopify's theme editor and save. Check the live theme rather than assuming installing the app also published the signup form.
- Choose the list: review Shopify subscriber-sync settings and select the email list intended to trigger the welcome Flow. Review any reverse profile sync before turning it on.
- Check a signup: connect the form to that list, inspect its opt-in setting and submit with your own authorized address. Check membership and channel consent before enabling automated marketing.
Our suggested clothing-store form explains what emails shoppers will receive, has a visible privacy link and leaves product information readable on mobile. Translate the form, confirmation screen and email for the intended audience. Do not assume changing the storefront language translates every Klaviyo message.
If moving from another email platform, plan the subscriber and automation handover first. Klaviyo's integration guidance warns about duplicate opt-in emails from overlapping integrations. Preserve consent and unsubscribe records, and avoid enabling two welcome sequences for the same signup.
Build one welcome email for new subscribers
Follow the email welcome-series instructions. In Flows, choose the welcome option or a welcome template from the flow library, then select the intended signup list. Review the template before activating its messages.
- Confirm the trigger: connect the list used by your signup form. Review entry rules and filters so the message reaches the intended email subscribers.
- Write useful content: introduce your store, link to one relevant collection, and explain where shoppers can find garment measurements, shipping, returns and contact information.
- Inspect each message: edit the subject, sender, template and links. Remove unused template messages or coupon placeholders rather than publishing them by accident.
- Check status before launch: keep messages in Draft during editing. Preview and check the signup path before setting the intended email Live; inspect each message's state rather than relying on the Flow's name.
Editable sample, not a tested campaign: “Thanks for subscribing to [Store name]. Explore [collection link], check each garment's measurement chart and read [shipping link] and [returns link] before ordering. Questions? Contact [store contact]. Use the unsubscribe link below if you no longer want these updates.” Replace every placeholder with real information.
If planning to source clothing through Trendsi account options, use the connection guide and supplier evaluation guide. Verify each item's stock, measurements and destination-specific route before featuring it. Shopify order data does not itself prove delivery, consistent sizing or supplier reliability.
Three reasons a welcome email may not arrive
- The subscriber has not confirmed
- Klaviyo's double-opt-in guidance requires confirmation before joining a double-opt-in list and entering its welcome series. Inspect confirmation and list membership; a profile record alone is insufficient.
- The message is not sending automatically
- Draft messages do not queue recipients. Manual mode holds messages for review rather than sending automatically. Changing to Live does not automatically send existing Needs Review messages. Inspect the queue before handling anything.
- A rule skipped the message
- Check recipient activity, filters and Smart Sending. Its email window defaults to 16 hours, and messages skipped because of it are not automatically rescheduled. Do not disable protections across the whole account just to make one test email appear.
Also check suppression, send allowance, sender settings and the receiving inbox's spam folder. A preview email checks content; it does not verify list entry or the full Flow. Use a fresh authorized test signup when needed and record the actual reason for a skipped message.
Five checks before live welcome emails
- Connection: verify the correct store, live theme embed, signup form and trigger list. Inspect the form on phone and desktop.
- Permission: complete the configured confirmation path and test unsubscribe behavior. Keep email and SMS consent distinct; do not import bought lists as subscribers.
- Allowance: check active profiles, monthly sends and the selected package. Estimate your planned sequence and campaigns together before approving any upgrade.
- Flow behavior: inspect message states, review queues, filters, Smart Sending and overlapping Shopify or app automations. Verify one intended message reaches your test address.
- Sender and content: check replies, links and unsubscribe controls. Follow Klaviyo's branded sending-domain instructions using records generated for your account, then verify and activate the domain as directed. Authentication does not guarantee inbox placement.
Add advanced features when you have a reason and the data
Purchase predictions are not a launch requirement. Klaviyo's predictive analytics guidance requires, among other conditions, at least 500 purchasing customers, 180 days of order history, orders in the last 30 days and some customers with three or more orders. A new store without sales cannot substitute an app installation for that history.
Add a collection-preference segment when shoppers actually provide a useful preference. Add a cart Flow only after checking its trigger, consent and duplicate-message behavior. Before adding SMS, confirm supported destinations, sender registration, separate permission, opt-outs and current costs. No app setting guarantees compliance in every customer market.
Keep a simple record of confirmed signups, sent and skipped messages, unsubscribes and related orders. Review actual refunds and costs, including goods, shipping, payment fees, discounts and subscriptions. A dashboard's attributed revenue is not proof the app caused extra profit. Our priority for a new store is a working signup path and accurate, useful messages.
Klaviyo questions for a first clothing store
Does every new clothing store need Klaviyo?
No. Select an email tool when you need its features and can maintain the messages and costs. Accurate product pages, policies and contact information remain part of launch preparation.
Does Klaviyo's free plan allow unlimited email sends?
No. The pricing page currently lists 500 monthly email sends and up to 250 active profiles. Check both allowances and the current terms in your account.
Is an active Klaviyo profile proof of marketing consent?
No. An active profile can exist without an explicit subscription. Check channel-specific consent separately; for this beginner welcome workflow, use people who subscribed to your email list.
Why does a double-opt-in signup not enter my welcome Flow yet?
The subscriber must confirm before joining the list. Check confirmation, the selected trigger list and message status with your own test address.
Will switching a manual message to live send its old review queue?
No. Existing Needs Review messages remain for manual handling. Inspect the queue and do not assume changing status clears or automatically sends it.
Can Klaviyo predict purchases for a store with no orders?
Do not rely on purchase predictions for a new store. Klaviyo's predictive analytics has order-history and customer requirements; installing the app does not create that evidence.
