Fashion dropshipping in the US: shipping, returns and store costs

Published by: Fashion Dropshipping · Research method

A US clothing store needs more than a product feed. Before listing a dress or hoodie, decide which warehouse will fulfill it, which addresses you can serve and who will handle a size-related return. This guide connects those decisions to an illustrative order budget so you can judge whether a small catalog is workable before expanding it.

This guide concerns customers in the United States. Your actual business location separately determines payment-provider eligibility and platform billing. Supplier information below comes from published terms; it is not a report of orders tested by us.

Separate US-stock and overseas delivery promises[1][6]

Trendsi's published dropship estimates distinguish US products, at 2–5 business days, from overseas products, at 5–10 business days. These are supplier estimates rather than delivery guarantees. Review the individual listing and current checkout quote: a catalog with both stock locations should not carry one blanket two-day delivery promise.

Check the exact destination, including apartment numbers, PO boxes, Alaska, Hawaii and military addresses, before setting a store-wide shipping rule. Trendsi lists US territories and APO/FPO addresses, but you still need to establish the route for the selected garment. An active US market and a shipping zone in Shopify enable checkout; they do not prove that your supplier can fulfill every address.

For a US customer, distinguish the date an order leaves the warehouse from the date it arrives. The FTC requires a reasonable basis for promised shipment times and procedures for delays and refunds. Record your supplier's dispatch estimate, tracking arrangement and escalation contact before publishing a delivery claim. For imported stock, obtain a current landed-cost quote rather than assuming that a low parcel value removes customs charges.

Choose availability by garment, not by app installation[1][4]

Trendsi is one documented fulfillment option for US destinations. Compare it with a domestic supplier or wholesaler that explicitly allows delivery to your customers without a minimum batch. Ask each candidate for the actual warehouse, available sizes, stock-sync behavior and whether several garments create separate packages and shipping charges. A Shopify integration alone does not answer those questions.

Shopify Payments lists the United States as a supported business location, subject to business and bank verification. If your business is elsewhere, use that location's eligibility rules even when your customers are American. Check payment processing, payout timing and any third-party transaction fees before advertising a checkout method. Keep the supplier shortlist small until the return route and order economics are established.

Your customer policy and supplier refund window are different[2][7]

Trendsi's return service currently applies to US orders. Its published policy requires initiating a qualifying clothing return within 7 days of receipt and shipping it back within 7 days of submission; garment condition, packaging and category exclusions also matter. It does not offer exchanges. Read the complete policy before promising that every item, including swimwear or intimates, can be returned to the supplier.

Your store must explain its own return deadline, destination, postage responsibility and treatment of defective items. If you offer a longer customer window than your supplier accepts, budget for the difference rather than expecting the supplier to fund it. For a size exchange, define how the replacement will be paid for and fulfilled. Keep refund cash available while the supplier processes a return; a promised refund is not the same as cash already back in your bank account.

Budget for the store and the order separately[3][4]

Take the current Shopify subscription quote for your business location and chosen billing period, then add the domain renewal, any paid apps and optional theme costs. A lower monthly equivalent on an annual plan may mean paying the year in advance. A free theme can keep design spending down, but it does not cover products, shipping, payment fees or refunds. Promotional trial pricing should not become your steady-state operating budget.

Keep three figures separate: money spent opening the store, recurring monthly bills and cash held for supplier payments or refunds. For example, 60 USD of assumed monthly platform, domain and app costs would require eight orders at the 8 USD contribution below to cover those bills. That is an illustrative break-even calculation, not a subscription quote or income forecast. It excludes your time, income tax and other unlisted expenses.

Illustrative US order budget

Sale revenue excluding collected sales tax
48.00 USD
Garment cost
18.00 USD
Outbound shipping
6.00 USD
Payment and currency fees
2.00 USD
Duties or nonrecoverable tax allowance
1.00 USD
Returns reserve
4.00 USD
Advertising
9.00 USD
Contribution before fixed store costs
8.00 USD

These USD amounts are hypothetical planning assumptions, not supplier quotes, tax rates or currency conversions. 48 − 18 − 6 − 2 − 1 − 4 − 9 = 8 USD before fixed costs. Collected sales tax is excluded from revenue; the return reserve is an allowance, not an observed return rate. Replace every input with your own quotes and tax treatment.
