What Is Shopify Dropshipping? How Fashion Store Orders Work

Published by: Fashion Dropshipping · Research method

Updated 5 October 2026. Based on published documentation; examples are illustrative, not our own store or supplier test results.

Shopify dropshipping is a retail model in which you sell through a Shopify store and a separate supplier holds and ships the products. Shopify provides the storefront and order tools; it is not the supplier and does not remove your responsibility to the customer.

How an order moves from checkout to delivery

  1. You choose products, write listings, set prices and publish store policies.
  2. A customer orders and pays your store through a supported payment provider.
  3. An app or manual process passes the fulfillment request to the supplier.
  4. You pay the supplier's product and shipping charges under its order workflow.
  5. The supplier dispatches the order and provides tracking when available.
  6. Your store handles customer communication, complaints and refunds.

A customer payout can arrive later than the supplier payment deadline. Keep a cash reserve, and confirm whether your integration requires order approval or manual payment. Automation transfers data; it does not guarantee stock or arrival.

What makes fashion dropshipping different?

Garment fit, material, color and care information affect buying decisions and returns. A generic size label is not enough: use the product's measurements and explain how to compare them with clothing the shopper owns. Do not claim you have worn or tested an item if you have only reviewed a listing.

Short-lived trends create another risk. Check whether the supplier can deliver while the style is still relevant. Keep an evergreen collection alongside limited experiments instead of depending on every viral post.

Where the margin comes from

Hypothetical example: a dress sells for $59, costs $24 and has $7 supplier shipping. The $28 difference is before payment fees, advertising, refunds, software and tax. If acquiring the customer costs $15, only $13 remains before those other expenses. That is not a reported store result or guaranteed profit.

Use the cost guide to separate contribution from net profit and budget for fixed costs.

What a supplier can and cannot do

A supplier can provide stock and fulfillment under its own terms. Your store still needs to check destination coverage, product data, branding requirements and returns. A US return service does not establish an international return solution.

Trendsi is one fashion-sourcing candidate. Its free membership does not cover product and shipping payments. Read the documented Trendsi review and supplier comparison before choosing a catalog.

Is this suitable for a new store?

It can help test a focused assortment without purchasing bulk stock. It still requires a working offer, accurate listings, reliable fulfillment, customer service and a budget. Neither Shopify nor a supplier integration guarantees demand.
