Shopify vs WooCommerce for Fashion Dropshipping

Shopify includes hosting in its store subscription. WooCommerce provides a free WordPress ecommerce core, with hosting and maintenance arranged separately. For your first clothing dropshipping store, compare the complete setup you can operate: supplier connection, payment eligibility, recurring bills and support when something breaks.

Shopify vs WooCommerce: who maintains your store?
Shopify's pricing page confirms that commerce hosting is included. With WooCommerce, you choose a WordPress hosting arrangement and the extensions your store needs. Its official cost framework separates the free core from hosting, extensions and payment processing.
Write down who will handle each task. A managed host or developer may take on some WooCommerce work, but ask what the service includes. A Shopify subscription still leaves you responsible for products, supplier settings, customer service and the apps you choose.
| Task | Shopify route | WooCommerce route |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting | Included commerce hosting; check your selected plan. | Choose hosting that meets current WooCommerce requirements. |
| Updates and recovery | Confirm app support and a recovery approach for your content or customizations. | Assign WordPress, WooCommerce, theme and extension updates, backups and recovery. |
| Supplier connection | Confirm the app supports your products, variants and order process. | Confirm the exact plugin or connection supports your installed software. |
| Payments | Check provider eligibility and all applicable fees. | Check gateway eligibility, compatibility and all applicable fees. |
| Customer promises | You check product information, delivery, returns and customer support. | You check product information, delivery, returns and customer support. |
For WooCommerce, ask your host to check the current server recommendations. Its update guide calls for backups, staging checks and verification after updates. Staging is a separate copy of the store used to check changes before customers encounter them. Include this work in the support quote.
Does your clothing supplier support the chosen platform?
The official Trendsi Shopify app listing establishes a documented Shopify connection. If that is your intended route, read our Trendsi terms review for product, delivery and return questions, then use the Trendsi setup guide.
This review does not establish a supported native Trendsi integration for WooCommerce. Confirm the current route with Trendsi before paying for a WordPress setup that depends on it. A Shopify app listing does not verify WooCommerce compatibility; it also does not rule out a separately supported connection.
For any proposed WooCommerce connection, ask the supplier or integration developer:
- Which products and variants can be imported, and what needs manual editing?
- How do stock and price changes reach the store, and what happens when a size sells out?
- Which order status triggers forwarding, supplier payment and fulfillment?
- How are failed orders, cancellations and tracking updates handled?
- Which WooCommerce versions are supported, and who resolves compatibility problems?
A product feed or manual order process may suit a small collection, but document the extra work. If your supplier cannot confirm a workable route, compare clothing supplier options before committing. If you choose Trendsi after these checks, you can create a Trendsi account.
Compare the full first 90 days, including upfront payments
Do not compare a Shopify subscription with the WooCommerce core alone. Use the same collection, supplier route and required features for both quotes. Record the currency, taxes, billing date, introductory period and renewal price for each item.
- Store and domain: Shopify's regular plan or WooCommerce hosting, plus domain registration and renewal.
- Supplier connection: necessary app, plugin or integration charges and any supplier membership.
- Design: your selected theme and any setup work; paid design is a separate decision.
- Maintenance: backup, recovery, updates and technical support services you will actually use.
- Per-order costs: garment, supplier shipping, payment and currency conversion charges, and expected unrecovered return costs.
Get the current localized offer from Shopify pricing and billing options. For WooCommerce, request a hosting and support quote rather than treat a general price range as your bill. Check annual extension payments and renewals as well as monthly hosting.
A blank comparison you can fill in without buying anything
Copy these lines into your notes for each candidate setup:
- One-time setup and design: ___
- Recurring bills due in the first 90 days: ___
- Annual charges paid upfront during those 90 days: ___
- Total cash paid for the setup in the first 90 days: ___
- Regular monthly costs after offers expire: ___
- Annual renewals, dates and amounts: ___
- Separate cash reserve for supplier payments and customer refunds: ___
- Person responsible for maintenance and estimated time each month: ___
Fictional arithmetic example, not a quote for either platform: $150 setup + three $40 monthly bills + a $120 annual extension payment = $390 paid during the first 90 days. Keeping another $150 available for supplier payments and refunds would require $540 available initially across those items. That reserve is available cash, not automatically an expense. An annual fee's monthly equivalent does not change when the full bill is due.
Then use the order cost calculator with your own garment and delivery costs. If you allocate store expenses per order, choose a realistic order-count assumption and avoid counting the same cost twice. The result depends on your assumptions; it does not predict sales. Our clothing-store cost guide explains the Shopify budget in more detail.
Check the payment provider for your business country
Your business location and your customer's delivery destination are different checks. Review Shopify Payments eligibility or WooPayments availability, then the requirements for your actual business and account. Being on a supported-country list does not itself confirm approval.
WooPayments is one WooCommerce payment option, not the whole platform. If your chosen service is unavailable, investigate an eligible gateway and its integration. Shopify likewise directs unsupported Shopify Payments businesses to third-party providers. Include the relevant processing, platform and conversion fees in your quote. Check the provider's payout schedule when planning how you will fund supplier orders.
Check one garment through the store before launch
Use one representative product with multiple sizes or colors. Record the expected outcome, actual outcome and unresolved questions. A storefront preview alone cannot verify fulfillment.
- Product information: verify variant selection, size measurements, fabric, image permissions and your delivery wording against supplier information.
- Cart: check the selected size, quantity, currency and stock behavior on a phone.
- Checkout: check the intended delivery zone and the total customers see, including configured shipping and taxes.
- Payment test: follow the selected gateway's supported testing method. Shopify's test-order guide says gateway testing requires a paid plan; customers cannot place live orders while providers are in test mode.
- Supplier handoff: confirm how your integration distinguishes tests from live orders before triggering anything. Do not assume a payment simulation verifies supplier payment, dispatch or delivery.
- Maintenance check: for WooCommerce, repeat the important product, cart and gateway checks on staging after relevant updates.
If you are preparing without ordering samples, mark garment quality and live fulfillment as unverified. Use the store launch checklist to track what remains. For several storefront languages, review translated measurements, variant labels, delivery information and checkout in each supported language, including right-to-left layouts where relevant.
Choose the setup you can run consistently
Investigate Shopify first when you want included hosting and your chosen supplier has a documented Shopify connection. For the Trendsi route, continue with the Shopify and Trendsi setup guide after checking supplier fit and costs.
Investigate WooCommerce when WordPress is important to your website and you have a supported supplier connection plus a clear maintenance arrangement. Get the hosting, integration and support answers before purchasing extensions.
Whichever you choose, write original product descriptions, useful sizing explanations and clear delivery information. Follow Google's SEO Starter Guide for accessible, understandable content and navigation. This comparison does not establish that either platform ranks better or is more likely to appear in AI answers.

Frequently asked questions
Is Shopify or WooCommerce easier for a first clothing store?
Shopify includes commerce hosting, which removes a separate hosting decision. WooCommerce lets you choose a WordPress setup, but hosting, updates and support still need an owner. Choose by supplier compatibility, payment eligibility, total costs and the work you can manage.
Is WooCommerce free for fashion dropshipping?
The WooCommerce core is free. A working store can still require paid hosting, extensions, design, maintenance and payment processing. Supplier products and delivery also cost money. Obtain quotes for the complete setup.
Does Trendsi work with WooCommerce?
This review establishes a documented Trendsi Shopify app, but does not establish a supported native WooCommerce integration. Ask Trendsi to confirm the current connection and its product, stock, order and tracking behavior before committing to a setup.
Which platform is cheaper over the first 90 days?
Compare the same required features, one-time work, recurring bills, upfront annual fees and renewal costs for each setup. Keep supplier-payment and refund reserves separate from expenses. Neither the free WooCommerce core nor a Shopify introductory offer establishes the complete cost.
What maintenance does WooCommerce need?
Assign responsibility for hosting, WordPress, WooCommerce, themes, extensions, backups and recovery. Check updates on a staging copy before applying them to the live store, then verify the important product, cart, payment and order workflows. A managed service may perform some of this work; confirm its scope.
Can I check the store without ordering clothing samples?
You can review products, variants, cart totals and supported payment tests without a sample order. These checks do not verify garment quality, dispatch or delivery. Mark live fulfillment as unverified until it has been established with evidence. Shopify gateway testing requires a paid plan.
