Print-on-Demand vs Fashion Dropshipping: Costs and Tradeoffs

Published by: Fashion Dropshipping · Research method

Updated 13 October 2026. Provider documents checked on this date. Costs below are invented examples; we have not placed supplier sample orders.

Choose print-on-demand when your original artwork is the reason to buy. Choose catalog fashion dropshipping when your offer is a carefully selected range of existing garments. Neither route automatically produces better margins, faster delivery or an exclusive clothing line. Compare one product, one destination and the full order cost before choosing.

Both can help you start an online clothing store without holding bulk stock. You still need to fund supplier payments, build accurate product pages and handle customer questions. If you want to create original garments rather than decorate existing products, start with the clothing-brand launch plan.

Print-on-demand vs fashion dropshipping at a glance

POD is itself a form of supplier fulfillment. In this comparison, “fashion dropshipping” means selling existing catalog garments that a supplier ships to your customer.

Big unanswered questionWill the design and physical print meet the customer’s expectations? Will the garment, sizing and delivery match the listing?

Trendsi vs Printful: which fits your first clothing store?

Investigate Trendsi for a boutique built around existing catalog garments; investigate Printful when your own artwork or embroidery is central to the product. Start with the product your customer needs, then compare the provider’s costs and terms.

This comparison covers Trendsi’s catalog dropshipping route and Printful’s print-on-demand service. Trendsi also offers wholesale and made-to-order services with separate terms. Neither route here gives you unrestricted control over patterns, fabric or garment construction.

What delivery estimate can I use?Check the selected item’s shipping origin and your customer’s country in the shipping guidance.Use fulfillment time plus shipping time for that product and destination, as explained in the delivery guidance.
What if the customer wants a return? The return service is US-only at this check, with short deadlines, item conditions and exclusions. It does not accept returns for customers outside the US.The refund policy generally excludes wrong size, wrong color and changes of mind. Damaged or misprinted items have a claims process; read the exceptions and deadlines.
What evidence is still missing?Product-specific fit, physical quality and actual delivery remain unverified by a catalog listing alone.A mockup does not verify print quality, placement, fit or actual delivery.

Supplier reimbursement and your promises to customers are separate. Budget for unsupported refunds and check the full current terms for your market before accepting orders. Keep upfront artwork work and recurring store bills separate from per-order charges so you do not count costs twice.

Start with the customer’s reason to buy

An illustrator with artwork for a specific audience has a reason to investigate POD. A boutique idea built around coordinated office outfits has a reason to compare catalog garments. These are possible starting points, not evidence that either audience will purchase.

Write down one customer, one clothing need and one initial product. Then ask what makes your offer useful beyond adding a logo or importing a supplier description. It might be original artwork, clear fit information, a thoughtful assortment or practical styling advice. Do not describe a catalog item as your exclusive design without an agreement supporting that claim.

For a manufactured collection, the decisions change: patterns, materials, grading, sampling and production minimums enter the plan. Use the clothing-brand model comparison rather than assuming POD provides full control over garment construction.

Which leaves more from a clothing order?

The answer depends on the actual product and destination. The following fictional USD examples are not Printful or Trendsi quotes. Both assume a $32 order revenue excluding collected tax, including any shipping charged to the customer. The two products are not assumed to be identical.

Invented one-item orders: compare more than product price
Amount per orderPOD exampleCatalog example
Order revenue, excluding collected tax$32.00$32.00
Product including chosen decoration$15.00$14.00
Supplier shipping$5.00$7.00
Payment / conversion fees$1.50$1.50
Return-cost reserve$2.00$2.00
Other variable costs$0.50$0.50
Advertising$6.00$6.00
Contribution before fixed costs and tax$2.00$1.00

The POD calculation is $32 − $15 − $5 − $1.50 − $2 − $0.50 − $6 = $2. Its higher product cost is offset by the assumed lower shipping charge. This does not establish a general winner.

Change one assumption: if the POD return reserve rises from $2 to $4, its contribution falls to $0. The catalog example stays at $1 under its original assumptions. The reserve is a planning allowance, not a measured return rate or a provider guarantee.

Before advertising, these examples leave $8 and $7 respectively. Spending all of that on acquisition would leave zero contribution in this model. Fixed expenses, artwork development and tax can still reduce the final business result. Recalculate with your own amounts in the free order-cost calculator, using one currency throughout.

Check shipping and returns for the exact order

Printful’s delivery guidance combines fulfillment time with shipping time. A production estimate is not the date the customer receives the garment. Trendsi’s shipping table distinguishes destinations and product origins. Do not turn a US estimate into a promise for every market.

Returns can change the calculation. Printful generally excludes buyer’s remorse and incorrect size or color from its return and refund coverage; its page also describes exceptions and claims for damaged or misprinted items. Trendsi’s return policy sets conditions for US returns and does not provide international returns. Read the current full terms before writing your own store policy.

Your customer-facing promises and the supplier’s reimbursement terms are separate. Do not copy a supplier exclusion into your store policy without checking the requirements for your business and market.

Can you sell both in one Shopify store?

A store can offer printed products alongside catalog garments, but plan the mixed basket before importing both ranges. A $5 POD shipping charge plus a separate $7 catalog shipment would cost $12 in this invented example. If checkout collects only $7 for delivery, your budget must cover the remaining $5.

Check the actual shipping configuration, separate tracking messages and each supplier’s return process. Start with a range whose costs and delivery explanation you can manage; adding another provider adds another set of conditions to review.

Compare two products before choosing your route

Use one catalog candidate and one POD candidate for the same customer need and delivery country. They need not be identical, but record any differences in materials, decoration, sizing or included shipping that make a price comparison unfair.

  1. Save the evidence: product and variant references, source links, check date, measurements, destination quote and return terms. Mark missing information as unknown.
  2. Separate the money: order costs, monthly commitments, one-off artwork work and the cash needed to pay a supplier before a store payout arrives.
  3. Choose the next check: identify the unresolved fact that could change your decision. A blank field is not a zero cost or proof that a route is suitable.

Download the product comparison worksheet (.txt)

The blank worksheet is a planning record, not a supplier score. Work out each candidate’s price with the clothing price check. Then prepare a product-specific size chart and description based on confirmed facts.

Choose your next step

My idea is a curated clothing store

Define a small assortment and confirm the supplier’s destination, sizing and delivered costs.

Follow the online clothing-store launch guide

My idea depends on original designs

Decide whether decoration on available products is enough, or whether you need original garment development.

Work through the clothing-brand launch plan

For catalog sourcing, review Trendsi against the supplier comparison criteria. A supplier account is not proof that every product or destination fits your store.

Questions before choosing a model

Is print-on-demand better for starting a clothing brand?

It can fit a brand based on original artwork using a provider’s products. If your idea needs a specific pattern, fit, fabric or construction, compare manufacturing. Neither a printed logo nor a store name establishes exclusive rights to the garment.

Which model is cheaper to start?

Compare the actual costs you need to fund: design work, samples if ordered, store bills, product payments, shipping and refunds. Printful advertises no minimum orders for its POD service, but individual production and shipping still cost money. Catalog suppliers have their own terms; there is no universal startup budget.

Do I need to order samples before comparing suppliers?

You can shortlist using documented product details, quotes and policies. That does not verify physical quality or delivery performance. Keep untested claims clearly identified and use the supplier evidence worksheet to record what remains unknown.
